A fast and efficient computer-implemented method for recovering a digital image from an image acquired through an optical system, wherein the characteristics of the optical system are unknown, comprises the steps of estimating a point spread function based on the acquired image; estimating the recovered digital image, based on the estimated point spread function and the acquired image; and outputting the recovered digital image. According to the invention, the step of estimating a point spread function is blind in that the estimation is not based on actual characteristics of the optical system.
