PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon fiber having less elution amount of metal ions which deposit on an electrode of an electrochemical device such as a battery or a capacitor and may cause shorting and the like.SOLUTION: A carbon fiber contains at least one kind of catalyst metal selected from a group consisting of Fe, Mo and V, and a metal oxide carrier, and has a R value by a Raman spectrometer (ID/IG) of 0.5 to 2.0 and an electrochemical metal elution amount of the catalyst metal of 0.01 mass% or less.
