The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for photographing an image in a portable terminal which comprises the steps of: photographing images for a predetermined number with a predetermined time interval when a photographing signal is inputted in an optimal subject shooting mode; recognizing a subject from the photographed images and extracting candidate images containing the recognized object; determining validity of the extracted candidate images; and displaying one of the photographed images as a representative image and displaying only valid candidate images determined as the valid candidate images in the determination result on one side of the representative image or displaying the valid candidate images and invalid candidate images determined as invalid candidate images to be separated.
