A thermal store has a heat storage unit with a heat storage medium (2, figure 1), and a first heat exchange system (3, figure 1) for heating the heat storage medium e.g. using heat from an automotive internal combustion engine. A second heat exchange system 28 for transferring heat from the store to a target includes a conductive heat transfer element 8 and a fluid circuit (figure 9) to supply heat via transfer element 8. The transfer element 8 can move e.g. by sliding between a conductive heat transfer configuration where it is in contact with the core (figure 4) and a non-conductive heat transfer configuration where it is in contact with insulating members 9 (figure 5). This arrangement allows a control system to regulate the thermal store for safe operation and to move the store between heat storage and heat delivery modes. |
