摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine controller that detects a rotation angle of a crankshaft from output of a cam angle sensor even when a crank angle sensor fails, to enable operation of an engine having a variable valve timing mechanism varying a rotational phase of an intake camshaft and a lock mechanism for locking the rotational phase on an intermediate lock phase. SOLUTION: A determination is made on whether or not a rotational phase has been locked to the intermediate lock phase by the lock mechanism. When the crank angle sensor fails, control of the variable valve timing mechanism is stopped, and a determination is made on whether lock completion has been determined or not (S601→S602). When the lock completion has been determined, it is regarded that the rotational phase of the intake camshaft is in the intermediate lock phase (S603), and when the lock completion has not been determined, it is regarded that the rotational phase of the intake camshaft is in an initial phase (the most retarded angle phase) (S604), and the rotation angle of the crankshaft is detected from the output of the cam angle sensor.
