In a thermonuclear device, employing deuterium gas, a high neutron production rate is attained, from a D-D reaction along the length of the plasma. A hollow anode, which encloses the plasma, is provided with a magnetic mirror coil at each end and is supplied with fuel gas through a side inlet. The anode is open at each end, near one of which the cathode is mounted, with an electron reflector opposite each opening. The device is contained in a vacuum vessel and the anode and reflectors are cooled. The anode cavity may be either conical or cylindrical. With the establishment of the plasma, separate cathode heating is not required due to electron emission by ion impact.</p> |
