A combined burner-inlet valve for gas lighters has a housing 1, Fig. 1, in a reservoir wall, and a valve member 7 movable in the housing and including an inlet and outlet passage 8. Member 7 slides in a portion 2 screwed into housing 1 and carries a filter 14 around opening 10, a sealing member 18 being mounted in recess 21 to close ports 17, Fig. 2. In the burner open position, Fig. 1, a spring 21b moves member 7 upwards to grip sealing member 18 between shoulders 16b, 19 to close ports 17; gas therefore flows out of the reservoir through opening 10. In the inlet open position, Fig. 2, the neck 23 of a refill vessel pushes member 7 down to move ports 17 clear of sealing member 18 to allow liquified gas to flow to the reservoir. In Fig. 3, not shown, the reservoir is vented to atmosphere during refilling through the space between members 7, 2. The gas flow through opening 10, Fig. 4, is throttled by compressing a wick 40 between the end of member 7 and a ball 39 carried by a member 37 screwed on to member 7 and prevented from rotation by engagement of an extension in a slot in housing 1a the member 7 is hexagonal in cross-section and is rotated by a wheel 27 to adjust the compression of wick 40. A disc 32 in snuffer cap 30 normally closes passage 8. To refill the reservoir 26, a vessel depresses member 7 to move ports 17 clear of seal 18 which is also moved away from shoulder 19a to open an exhaust passage through ports 25, 25a and the gap between member 7 and bore 5. The valve of Fig. 6, not shown, carries a sealing member with a long stem in passage 8 of member 7 and this member is moved down by the snuffer to positively close opening 10. In Fig. 7A this sealing member and stem 8a are spring-biased to close opening 10 and a lever 48 engages stem 8a to raise the sealing member when fingerpiece 49 is depressed; a member 50 carrying a projection 51 to engage lever 48 can be slid clear of lever 48 so that the snuffer 30 can be opened for refilling without rotating lever 48. To fill the reservoir from a piercable vessel an adapter, Fig. 9, is used having a flange 61 with a seal 62 to engage a flange 12, Fig. 1, on member 7, a hollow needle 55 being biased by a spring 53 to register ports 57 with a seal 52. On insertion of a neck of a vessel in housing 1c, pressure on the vessel causes needle 55 to pierce the vessel closure, and the vessel neck engages flange 58 whereby the ports 57 are moved clear of seal 52 and also member 7 is depressed to open the inlet valve to the reservoir.
