<p>A load handling apparatus 28 for a load handling vehicle such as a forklift truck 2. The apparatus comprising, a rear carriage plate 38 which is secured to the lifting mechanism of a forklift mast assembly, and, a front carriage plate 40 to support the load, which is rotatably mounted to the rear plate so that it can be rotated by an actuator 52. An attitude sensor is provided to generate a signal indicative of the lateral attitude of the rear load handling section 38 relative to the horizontal, and in response to the signal, a controller is configured to automatically rotate the front load handling section 40 relative to the rear load handling section 38 by means of actuator 52 to optimise load stability. The apparatus may further include inertial sensing for sensing lateral inertial forces, which, in conjunction with the attitude sensor and controller, further controls the rotational position of the front plate 40 to optimise stability. The front support plate may comprise lifting tines and the attitude sensor may comprise at least one gyroscope and at least one accelerometer.</p> |
