This application relates to an absorbent article 1 comprising an absorbent layer and one or more adhesive strips for attaching the article to a mattress. It also provides a package containing one or more of the absorbent articles of the invention. It further relates to use of an absorbent article and a method for protecting a mattress from leakage of menstrual fluid. The mattress protector is preferably made of cotton, is oval in shape, has an area of at least 600cm2, a thickness of less than 1cm and is biodegradable.
