1,066,977. Cutting cigarette filter rods. AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. May 10, 1965 [May 8, 1964], No. 19643/65. Heading A2C. [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] The boundaries between alternate relatively transparent and relatively opaque lengths 11, 12 of cigarette filter rod are detected by illuminating the rod with light from an incandescent lamp 3 and detecting the light emerging from the rod at a point so axially displaced from the point of incidence, that direct light from the lamp cannot fall on the detecting photomultiplier 9. The photomultiplier output is differentiated and the negative pulses produced are suppressed to give a train of pulses corresponding to the changes from opaque to transparent lengths of filter rod. The phase of these pulses may be compared with a reference signal derived from a cutting blade, and the feed of the filter rod adjusted to maintain the cutting in the desired part of the filter rod.
