587,935. Coating strip metal. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., BARNARD, R. M., and SAGE, J. A. April 19, 1944, No. 7237. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXXVI] Copper &c. foil 1 from a reel 2 is passed between flattening rollers 3, washed in a bath 4 of trichlorethylene, dried between drying plates 5, and then passed through a solution 6 of polystyrene or styrene derivatives in trichlorethylene or benzene, to provide an insulating coating on the foil, in the manufacture of electric condensers (see Group XXXVI). Dichlorostyrene or other non-polar compounds of chlorine with styrene are preferred, and may be loaded with a ceramic dust. The insulating coating may be dried by means of radiofrequency eddy currents produced in the metal foil by electrodes 7, producing an air and solvent-free coating. In a modification, Fig.. 4 (not shown), the foil is passed through the polystyrene &c. bath in such a manner as to leave one edge uncoated. |
