The device controls coolant flow in a motor cooling system of a vehicle. The device has a first inlet 241, second inlet 242, first outlet 243 and second outlet 244, which are preferably connected to a cylinder head outlet, cylinder block outlet, radiator bypass and radiator, respectively. The device directs coolant through the first and second outlets in dependence on the temperature of coolant flowing through the device. Ideally, the device includes an outlet valve having first 243V and second 244V closure portions that close the first and second outlets respectively. The device may also have an inlet valve 242V that controls coolant flow through the second inlet. The first and second valves may be operated by a cylinder 255C containing one or two types of thermally expanding wax. Where two waxes are used they have different melting temperatures. The outlet valve may be movable between three positions, a first position (figures 3-4) in which coolant only passes out the first outlet, a second position (figure 6) in which coolant only passes out the second inlet, and an intermediate position (figure 5) that permits coolant through the first and second outlet. |
