A refuse container 1 to be emptied by lifting and tipping has an outwardly extending lip 2 around the upper periphery engageable by a flange 17 of a support frame 15 pivotally mounted at 16 to carrier arms 13 each rigidly attached to lifting arms 11. The rear of the support frame 15 is open to receive the container and a support member 20 across the front partially supports the container during tipping. Pivotally supported bearing pads 22 are mounted above the support frame and to the front of its pivot point and bear upon the container when it is in the inverted position. Extending downwardly and forwardly of the lifting arms 11 are a pair of arms 14 rigidly attached thereto and mounting bearing pads 27 such that when the container has been slightly raised, by rotating the lifting arms, the pads 27 bear against the side of the container to assist in the lifting and tipping. During the initial raisure of the container by the lifting arms through the support frame, said frame pivots about the axis 16 to maintain the container vertical. The spacing and the height of the support arms and the distance between the bearing pads 22 and the support arms is such that the container may be easily positioned between the same without coming into contact therewith. An adjustable stop 25 mounted on the vehicle to which the lifting and tipping apparatus is attached engages the lifting arms 14 to vary the height of the frame 15 to suit the container size. The container has a pair of lids 3 hinged at 6 and mounting actuating stirrups 4 engageable by locking hooks 32 of a lid opening mechanism. The locking hooks 32 are attached to a flap 31 mounted on steering links 35 and movable on rollers in a guide way 34. Counter bearing means 33 attached to the steering links engage the hinges 6 during the tipping and actuate the lid opening mechanism. A flexible rubber sheet 37 is attached to the flap 31 to cover the refuse opening in the vehicle. Lock means 40 pivotally mounted to the carrier arms 13 engage receiving means 42 on the support frame to prevent rotation thereof due to, e.g. movement of the container, when the container is in the inverted position. |
