An aircraft propulsion power plant 100 for use in an aircraft comprises one or more core engines 110 housed in an airframe 102 of the aircraft and one or more secondary propulsion units 120 removably attached to the airframe. The secondary propulsion unit may comprise a propeller 122 mounted on a nacelle that is fitted to a pylon 126. One or more power transmission means are configured to transmit mechanical power from the or each core engine to a corresponding one of the or each secondary propulsion unit when the or each secondary propulsion unit is attached to the airframe. The transmission comprises a gearbox 134 being driven by a low pressure spool of the core engine and driving a first shaft 138. A second driveshaft 132 is driven via an intermediate coupling 142 and then drives a second gearbox 136 to power the propeller. The core engine may drive a generator which supplies electric power to an electric motor to drive the secondary propulsion unit. The aircraft may have interchangeable wings (404, 424, figs 4 and 5) to enable different roles to be undertaken while optimising performance. |
