A method of forming a curved profile of an edge, such as a leading edge 12, on an aerofoil (10 fig. 3) such as a gas turbine blade or vane, the curve having a profile axis, comprises providing an aerofoil whose edge extends along a length, providing a fluid jet 2 that has a Gaussian energy distribution profile (8a fig. 2), traversing the fluid jet 2 along a path that substantially follows the length of the edge 12 to machine an edge having the curved profile, the maximum energy of the fluid jet being directed to a location offset L from the axis. The Gaussian energy distribution may be a normal energy distribution profile (8a fig. 2). The offset L may be constant along the length of the edge. The profile may follow an elliptical curve, the maximum width of the aerofoil normal to the major axis (A-A fig. 3) of the ellipse being equal to the length of the minor axis (B-B fig. 3) of the ellipse and the offset L being greater than or equal to the minor radius of the ellipse. The fluid jet may comprise a water jet and abrasive particles. |
