A marker system for use as a security marker or taggant for application to surfaces operating at high temperatures, such as engines, exhausts and catalytic converters, comprises a marker, a temperature resilient medium for securing the marker system to the surface and an indicator. The medium contains an inorganic matrix, in particular a silica based material such as potassium silicate, to secure the marker to a surface and the composition is preferably in the form of a spray. The marker comprises a fingerprint to render the marker unique and which may be an organometallic compound. The indicator is preferably phosphorescent. A camera may be used to measure the marker system under UV or IR radiation for comparison with a database to identify the object to which the marker system is applied. |
