An adhesive composition for bonding butyl rubber to nylon textile material comprises (1) a dihydric phenol of the benzene or naphthalene series; (2) a phenolic dialkanol material which is (a) a compound of structure I:- where R and X are independently selected from hydrogen atoms and acyl radicals having less than four carbon atoms, Y is a chlorine atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or nitro radical and n is 1-3 or (b) self-condensation polymers of compounds of structure I in which R and X are hydrogen atoms, n is one and Y is a hydrocarbon radical or (c) a compound of structure II:- where R1 is an alkyl group having not more than four carbon atoms and Y is as above, the proportion of said dihydric phenol to said phenolic dialkanol material being from 20:80 to 80:20 parts by weight; and (3) a liquid medium for the solid components, said solid components being 5 to 15% of the total weight. The compounds of structures I and II may have methyl groups in the 3 and 5 positions. The specified dihydric phenols of the benzene and naphthalene series include the preferred resorcinol and hydroquinone as well as catechol, 1,2-, 1,4-, and 1,5-naphthalenediols, p-tert.-butylcatechol, toluhydroquinone, 2,5-di-tert.-butylhydroquinone, orcinol, 2-methyl-1,4-naphthalenediol and 4-n-hexylresorcinol. Numerous compounds having structure I are specified including the preferred 2,6-dimethylol-4-tert.-butyl-phenol and 2,6-dimethylol-4-methyl phenol. Typical self-condensation polymers of compounds of structure I are the alkaline-catalyzed reaction products of 4-tert.-butylphenol or 4-tert.-octylphenol and formaldehyde or the self-condensation polymers of the corresponding monomeic 2,6-dimethylol phenols. The specified compounds of structure II are ethyl 2,6-dimethylol-4-methylphenyl ether and methyl 2,6-dimethylol-4-tert.-butylphenyl ether. The adhesive composition can either be used as an aqueous dispersion, in which case a dispersing agent such as methyl cellulose is used, or as a solution in an organic solvent including ethanol-water mixtures, isopropanol, ethanolxylene mixtures, p-dioxane, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran.
