Provided is a tape storage device having an optimal write method even when an overwrite operation is introduced during a combined read/write operation. When the overwrite position of data on a tape is upstream of the end position of write-once data on the tape, the overwrite data position is updated as the end position of the write-once data; and when the overwrite position of the data on the tape is downstream of the end position of the write-once data on the tape, the overwrite data position is updated as the end position of the write-once data in a non-volatile memory (EOD in memory). This allows the overall performance of the combined operation to be improved in the tape storage device even when an overwrite operation is introduced in a command string in which reading and once-writing from a higher-level device are combined together.
