A process for making animal food comprises heating a food mix comprising cereal and water to gelatinise the starch and extruding during and/or after heating (e.g. by friction, hot air or steam) to form shaped food masses (e.g. cubes or pellets) which are bonded by gelatinised starch and which have a density of at least 1.1 g/cc. The shaped masses are dried e.g. by hot air. The food mix may comprise wheat, wheat flour, maize, barley, oats, soya beans, soya bean meal, white fish meal, meat meal, bone meal, herring meal and offals. The shaped masses may be mixed with meat pieces and gravy, filled into cans and steamed in vacuo and heated at 260‹F. As shown, the heated food mix supplied by hopper 8, is forced through the openings in rotary die 10 by rollers 6 and cut into pellets or cubes by knife 7, the pellets faling on to rotary sifting plate 12 and deflected therefrom by plate 11 through an opening in wrapper plate 1. The position of the rollers is adjustable. |
