A continuous liquid phase hydrogenation process, for example (1) the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over a copper catalyst suspended in the 2-ethylhexyl ester of 2-ethyl hexanoic acid; (2), the hydrogenation of aniline to cyclohexylamine over a nickel catalyst suspended in the 2-ethylhexyl ester of 2-ethyl hexanoic acid; (3), the hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol over a nickel catalyst in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, comprises maintaining at the reaction temperature a bath comprising a suspension of the catalyst in the solvent, continuously feeding to the bath the substance to be hydrogenated together with a sufficient excess of hydrogen to entrain the reaction product or products, continuously separating from the entrained products the hydrogenated product in amount corresponding to the amount of feed and refluxing the remainder to the bath.ALSO:A continuous liquid phase hydrogenation reaction is carried out by a process comprising maintaining at the reaction temperature a bath comprising a suspension of a hydrogenation catalyst in an inert diluent which has a boiling point above the reaction temperature, continuously feeding to the bath the substance to be hydrogenated and a sufficient excess of hydrogen to entrain the reaction product(s) as vapour, the hydrogen feed rate being above 0.3 cubic metres per hour per litre of bath, separating from the entrained reaction product(s) the amount of hydrogenated product corresponding to the amount of feed and refluxing the remainder into the bath. Examples relate to:-(1), hydrogenation of furfural using a copper catalyst; (2) hydrogenation of aniline using a nickel catalyst; (3) hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol using a nickel catalyst.
