A covering material adapted to form a fire and corrosion proof barrier for lining flows and/or walls comprises a sheet of asbestos paper or asbestos fabric having a layer of synthetic resin containing a fire-resistant filler or plasticizer and carrying an external layer of discreet synthetic fibres secured to the layer of synthetic resin by an intermediate adhesive layer. The synthetic resin layer may be applied by means of a calendering machine. The filler may be asbestos powder, sulphobarytes powder, metal powder, metal oxide powder, ceramic powder or mica powder. Suitable plasticizers are tricresyl-phosphate and a mixed diphenyl-biphenyl ester or a phthalate. The amount of synthetic resin may be in the range from 100 to 150 grams per square centimetre. The adhesive layer may also be synthetic resin, for example polyvinyl chloride. Fibres may be applied using a gun or by an electrostatic process, they may be of variable length and may previously have been dyed to the desired colour. They may be of a polyamide resin. A layer of coarse non-woven fabric may be interposed between the synthetic resin layer and the adhesive later. This layer may be manufactured from jute or from asbestos fibres or other incormbustible inorganic fibres. In a further embodiment the layer of coarse fabric may be adhered directly to the layer of asbestos paper or asbestos fabric and another asbestos sheet similar to the first secured to the opposite face of such a non- woven layer. |
