The method involves measuring and storing values of power consumption per unit time by an electric water heater for a predetermined period of time (76). A degradation coefficient (lambda) of a resistor is calculated (78) based on power consumption values, and the degradation coefficient is compared (80) with a reference degradation coefficient value (lambda 0). A degradation alarm is generated (88) if the result of the comparison shows a deviation above a predetermined threshold.
