599995 Disclosed is a portable safety barrier for use over an access opening such as a manhole or access pit to prevent falls into the opening. The barrier includes at least one elongate bar member having a length greater than said access opening; and at least one cross-bar member connected to said elongate bar member. The cross-bar member is, when in use over the access opening, positioned transverse to said elongate bar member to form a substantially crosstype configuration. The cross bar members are pivotally connected to said elongate bar members to permit said barrier to convert from an expanded configuration when in use to a collapsed configuration for transportation and storage. Preferably two or more elongate bar members arranged substantially parallel to each other; and two or more cross-bar members arranged substantially parallel to each other; wherein said two or more substantially parallel elongate bar members and the two or more substantially parallel cross-bar members are arranged, when in use over the access opening, into the substantially cross-type configuration. Locking anchors are able to slide along the members on at least one of the elongate bar members or cross-bar members to securely anchor the barrier to the opening when in use. |
