A method of fabricating a lithium ion battery includes providing a work piece including a plurality of graphitic nanowalls, and providing boron and nitrogen growth on the graphitic nanowalls. The method also includes annealing the work piece after providing boron and nitrogen growth on the graphitic nanowalls and subjecting the annealed work piece to plasma energy to reduce surface oxides. The method further includes applying at least a portion of the work piece as an electrode on a lithium ion cell.
