A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to soak waterproof clothing into detergent water by agitating the clothing right and left for a predetermined time in the middle of the water supply cycle. A method for controlling a washing machine comprises the steps of: judging whether a light-weight clothing washing course is inputted(S300); supplying water up to a predetermined water level if the light-weight clothing washing course is inputted(S302); supplying water and agitating clothing right and left for a predetermined time if the water level reaches the set water level(S304); additionally supplying water(S306); and periodically generating water current in one direction(S308). |
