PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which satisfies at least one of the demands for characteristics such as a high maximum temperature and a low minimum temperature of a nematic phase, a low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy, a large value of dielectric anisotropy, a large specific resistance, high stability to ultraviolet rays, and high stability to heat, or which shows an appropriate balance regarding to at least two of the characteristics, and to provide an AM (active matrix) device having a short response time, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio, a long service life and the like.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition has a nematic phase and contains a specified compound having a large value of dielectric anisotropy as a first component and a specified compound having a low viscosity as a second component; and the composition may contain a specified compound having a high maximum temperature or a large value of dielectric anisotropy as a third component and a specified compound having a high maximum temperature or a low viscosity as a fourth component. A liquid crystal display device is provided, which contains the above composition. |
