PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a raw material for titanium dioxide for synthesizing a lithium titanate which can provide a lithium ion secondary battery which suppresses deterioration of an electrolyte and has high discharge capacity and can be highly densely filled.SOLUTION: There is provided a particulate rutile titanium dioxide composition containing titanium dioxide and an Li element, where 97 mass% or more and 100 mass% or less of a rutile type crystal is contained in the titanium oxide and the BET specific surface area is 1.5 to 5.0 m/g. There are provided a composition obtained by adding 0.10 to 2.00 pts.mass of an Li compound in terms of LiO based on 100 pts.mass (in terms of TiO) of titanium dioxide which is a precursor of the titanium dioxide and a method for producing the composition.
