摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a Saccharomyces strain capable of growing at a desired growth rate on xylose as a sole carbon source, a Saccharomyces strain growing on xylose at such a growth rate, and its use.SOLUTION: A method of producing at least one yeast cell having growth rate of at least one generation per 48 hours using xylose as a sole carbon source, comprises the steps of (a) preparing a population of genetically diverse non-recombinant yeast cells of Saccharomyces; (b) culturing the yeast cells under conditions which permit binding of DNA between the yeast cells by non-recombination techniques; (c) screening or selecting the yeast cells by culturing them on xylose-containing medium in which xylose is available as a sole carbon source for growth; and (d) repeating above steps (b) and (c).
