PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternate energy removal path for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV), which allows emergency steam extraction without using an external power source.SOLUTION: A method and system for an alternate energy removal path for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) 1 of a light water reactor is provided. A pair of manually operated containment isolation valves 36, one of which is located inside a primary containment 7 and the other of which is located outside the primary containment 7, are used to open and close a steam extraction line 30 that is fluidly coupled between the RPV 1 and a heat sink 32. The heat sink 32 is located outside the primary containment 7. An external power source is not required to operate the system or perform the method. |
