The engine (1) has a cylinder that is arranged in series in a cylinder crank case with pistons. The pistons are connected to a crank shaft (2) with a connecting rod. A device is provided for variably setting a compression ratio of the engine. The rotational movement of the crankshaft is transferable to an output shaft by means of the gear mechanisms (4,9). The crank shaft for variable adjustment of the compression ratio in a frame is pivotally mounted in the crankcase of the piston internal combustion engine. An independent claim is included for a method for variable setting of compression ratio of piston combustion engine in vehicle.
