A hybrid vehicle drive apparatus (1-1) is provided with an engine (1), a first rotary machine (MG1), a second rotary machine (MG2), a first planetary gear mechanism (10) for transmitting the rotation of the engine (1) to a drive wheel (32), and a clutch (CL1) and brake (BK1) as switching devices for changing the speed of the first planetary gear mechanism (10), and the hybrid vehicle drive apparatus (1-1) is configured according to a multi-shaft scheme in which the first rotary machine (MG1) is disposed on the same shaft as the engine (1), and the second rotary machine (MG2) is disposed on a shaft other than an output shaft of the engine (1). The first planetary gear mechanism (10) is disposed on the same shaft between the engine (1) and the first rotary machine (MG1), and the clutch (CL1) and brake (BK1) are disposed on the reverse side of the engine (1) from the first rotary machine (MG1).
