Catalysts comprising a major proportion of alumina and a minor proportion of a metal from Gps VI B or VIII B of the Periodic Table e.g. platinum, palladium, rhodium, nickel or tungsten are treated with hydrogen chloride, which may be produced in situ, at 510 DEG to 677 DEG C and then treated with a sulphur chloride under non-reducing conditions at elevated temperatures so that a substantial increase in the chlorine content of the catalyst results. The sulphur chloride is Sn Oa Clb Yc where Y is halogen other than chlorine, n is 1 or 2, a is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 5, b is 2, 4, or 7 c is 0 or 1 and b plus c is 2 to 8. Exemplified are Pt-Al2O3, catalysts activated with thionyl and sulphuryl chlorides and mono and di sulphur chlorides. The alumina bases are exemplified and may include silica, beryllia titania, zirconia, or boria. |
