The scanning endoscope system comprises: a scanning endoscope provided with a light-guiding part for guiding the illumination light, a driver part for oscillating the light-guiding part so that the irradiation position of the illumination light traces a path corresponding to a specified scanning pattern, and light-receiving parts for receiving the light returning from the illumination light; a light-detecting unit for outputting a signal corresponding to the intensity of the returning light; and a control unit for driving the driver part so as to sequentially perform a first scan in which the irradiation position of the illumination light proceeds from the outermost point on a spiral path towards the center point and a second scan in which the irradiation position of the illumination light proceeds from the center point of the spiral path to the outermost point and to perform a third scan in which the irradiation position of the illumination light circles on the samecircumference.
