<PICT:0946899/C1/1> Apparatus for dispersing a particulate solid in a liquid in the presence of particles of a grinding medium comprises a cylindrical vessel 12 having an inlet 28 at the bottom thereof and enclosing a dispersing zone, a cylindrical screen 49 supported at the top of the vessel by means of rings 14, 51 and enclosing a screening zone, and impellers 34, 34A rotatably mounted in the dispersing and screening zones so that when a solid and liquid mixture is introduced into the vessel via the inlet 28, the mixture is first subjected to the action of the impellers 34 in the dispersing zone and then to the action of the impellers 34A in the screening zone, the mixture being separated from the particles of grinding medium by the screen 49 and passing to a discharge shoot 55. The screening zone has a removable cover C to enable the particles of grinding medium to be introduced into the vessel 12. The peripheral speed of the impellers 34A is at least 15% greater than the peripheral speed of the impellers 34. The diameter of the screen is at least 10% greater than the inner diameter of the vessel 12 and the screening zone has a volume capacity at least 50% that of the vessel.
