601,992. Velocity modulated tubes. PATELHOLD PATENTVERWERTUNGS- & ELEKTRO-HOLDING AKT.-GES. June 11, 1945, No. 14775. Convention date, June 9, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron discharge device of the type in which the electrons are velocity modulated by a first electrode pair and their energy is extracted by a second electrode pair, the electrodes comprise concentric cylinders, and both the voltages applied to the first electrode pair and those occurring between the second pair form a series of waves progressing in the axial direction. As shown in the amplifier of Fig. 1 high-frequency oscillations applied at 7 to generate progressive waves on the grids 3 and 4, modulate the electrons from the cathode 1 on the way to the energy extracting electrodes 5, 6, of which 6 is the anode. Progressive waves produced on 5, 6 are extracted at 8 without reflections. Feedback may be effected between the second pair 5, 9, Fig. 3, and the first pair 3, 4 over a concentric line 11 of adjustable length, in which may be inserted an electrical filter or over a hollow wave guide. The cylindrical electrodes may be subdivided into strips parallel to the tube axis, and the corresponding energy extracting electrode pairs connected with the associated modulation electrodes over feed-back conductors. The feed-back conductors may be Lecher lines coupled together inductively to form a multiphase system. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to an arrangement with undivided electrodes operating with waves of higher mode, the field strength varying circumferentially. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
