In an alternator with permanent magnet rotor 8, the stator has a single output coil 14 embraced by interdigitated poles 9, 10 which are axially shortened so that they do not overlap, and thus angular movement of one set (9) of the poles is possible to vary the machine output (Fig. 3, not shown). The poles 9 are rotated by spider 20 connected to spindle 23 which may be rotated in dependence on engine load, e.g. to control the engine gear ratio. |
