A copolymer of an olefinic hydrocarbon and an ester of an unsaturated alcohol is treated with a hydrolysing agent while the copolymer is in the solid state, to form a hydroxyl-containing copolymer. The treatment may be effected within 25 DEG C. of the melting point of the copolymer and a softening agent may be present; solid forms mentioned are powders, pellets, foams, films, fibres and more massive articles. In Examples ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is hydrolysed with methanol/sodium methoxide, toluene being optionally present as a softening agent. Other softening agents are white spirit and aromatic or naphthenic fractions.
