A corrosion inhibitor for an acid solution e.g. hydrofluoric, phosphoric, sulphuric, hydrochloric, sulphamic, oxalic or citric acids consists of a compound of the group (1) and (2) where R and R' are H or alkyl of 1 to 6 C atoms, and X is H, R, ROH, OR, phenyl, phenyl substituted R, R-substituted phenyl, OR substituted phenyl or OR-substituted R, so long as one of X, R and R' are other than H.ALSO:Preparation of compounds of the formulae <FORM:1097490/C2/1> and <FORM:1097490/C2/2> wherein R and R1 are chosen from hydrogen and alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms inclusive and X is hydrogen, .R, .R.OH, .OR, phenyl, phenylsubstituted R, R-substituted phenyl, OR-substituted phenyl or OR-substituted R, with the proviso that one of X, R and R1 is other than hydrogen by reacting propargyl alcohol or a suitably substituted propargyl alcohol with an appropriate epoxy compound in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. a strong ion exchange base, or an acid catalyst, e.g. a Lewis acid, respectively. The reaction of propargyl alcohol with styrene oxide, propylene oxide and butylene oxide in the presence of boron trifluoride and with styrene oxide and butylene oxide in the presence of a quaternary ammonium containing resin in the hydroxyl form is described. The action of styrene oxide on 3,5 dimethyl-1-hexyn - 3 - ol, 3 - methyl - 1 - pentyn - 3 - ol and 3 - methyl - 1 - butyn - 3 - ol in the presence of boron trifluoride is also exemplified. Monopropargyl glycerol is obtained by the hydrolysis of glycidyl propargyl ether.
