A quilting machine comprises a multi-needle sewing head and a work-supporting carriage guided under the needles by means of an endless track. As described, the machine comprises a pair of horizontally spaced columns interconnected by vertically spaced bars 4 and 5. The upper bar 4 supports a head 8 containing the drive for a needle bar 9 and associated needle 10, and also mounting a presser bar 11 and associated presser foot 12. The lower bar 5 supports a looptaker 13 cooperating with needle 10 and driven by gears 28, 29 from a shaft 27 journalled on bar 5. A horizontal work-supporting plate, positioned between bars 4 and 5, is rigid with an upper carriage mounted for movement parallel to bars 4, 5 on a lower carriage mounted for movement transverse to bars 4, 5. An endless track, rigid with the upper carriage and in the form of the required stitch pattern, co-operates with a follower in driving engagement therewith. The machine is modified for alternatively sewing either two or three parallel lines of stitching simultaneously. For this purpose a horizontal bar 35, fixed to the needle bar 9, fixedly carries at its respective ends needle bars 36, 37, and associated needles 38, 39. A horizontal bar 45, fixed to the presser bar 11, fixedly carries at respective ends presser bars 46, 47 and associated presser feet 48, 49. Brackets 50 and 51, fixed to head 8, slidably receive bars 36, 46 and 37, 47 respectively. Additional gears 55, 56, mounted on shaft 27, mesh with gears 57 and 58 for driving looptakers 53 and 54 co-operating with needles 38 and 39 respectively. |
