The method involves deforming plastically a hollow portion (1) in arranged in axial direction under compression stress so that a pre-designated outer contour (1a) of the hollow portion is altered in a shaping region (1b). The outer-side of the hollow portion is embraced at the shaping region by dies (2,2',2''). An inner contour of the die adjacent to the shaping region is altered with respect to the pre-designated outer contour of the hollow portion. An independent claim is included for device for thickening wall along major axis of hollow portion.
