The invention comprises a fuel cell having as electrolyte comprising water and an acid of formula R-SO 3 H, R 1 -SO 3 H, R-R 1 -SO 3 H, R-COOH or HOCO-R-COOH or an anhydride thereof. R is either a completely fluorinated C 2-30 saturated hydrocarbon chain, or a completely fluorinated C 2-30 saturated carbocyclic radical and R 1 is a completely fluorinated C 6-12 aromatic radical. The electrolyte may comprise 5-70% of the acid or anhydride, e.g. perfluorobutyric acid. It may be used in a cell comprising a container divided into 3 compartments by an anode and a cathode the electrolyte lying between these. The electrodes may comprise a conductive material coated with a hydrophobic material or a composite mass of two such materials and may have a contact angle with water of 85 degrees or more. They may be coated or impregnated with a catalyst. Hydrophobic materials specified include addition polymers and asbestos treated with a chlorosilane. Conductive materials and catalysts specified include carbon, metals, and doped semi-conductors. In Example 1 the electrodes are prepared by mixing platinized carbon, P.T.F.E. and ammonium oxalate and heating to decompose the latter. In Example 2 the electrodes comprise platinum black, P.T.F.E. and polyacrylonitrile. The fuel may comprise a liquid hydrocarbon immiscible with the electrolyte, e.g. decane. The oxidant may be an oxygen-containing gas. The cell may operate at 100‹ C. |
