<p>A drilling rig 100 having a safety monitor 108 to detect the presence of a person within a first predefined volume 110, the monitor being responsive to influence the operation of the drive control system, for example by preventing the drive control system from operating or starting. The monitor may also be responsive to detecting a person within a second volume 116 by producing an audio or visual warning. The monitor may comprise a camera and light projector.
