<p>The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1075251/C2/1> wherein R2 is a C1- 3 alkyl or alkenyl group and R is a hydrogen atom or a group R1CO, wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 3 alkyl or alkeny group, with the exception of compounds wherein R1 and R2 are both methyl groups, and their preparation by (a) acylation of cymarol or a 41-acyl-cymarol, or (b) reduction of a 41-acyl-cymarin. 41-Acyl-cymarins are prepared by acylation of cymarin. Cymarol is prepared by reduction of cymarin. The compounds of the invention have cardiotonic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in form suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.</p> |
