A magnetic head polepiece for single or multiple track tape is formed from two blocks 1 and 2 of sintered oxidic ferromagnetic material each having a machine face 3, 4 by:- (a) Cutting away part of surface 3 to form a recess 5 having an edge 7 parallel to the future tape running surface x of the head. (b) Assembling the blocks, spaced apart by spacer 8, forming the grooves 9 and inserting magnetically insulating material 10 in the grooves. (c) Bonding the blocks and the insulating material together by heating with a vitreous substance such as glass or enamel. (d) Machining the upper surface of the block to form the running surface x, separating the upper part of the assembly from the lower portion at plane B and then forming grooves 13 in the surface B to meet the insulating material 10. Alternatively the upper part of the assembly may be separated from the lower at the planeγ. |
