The coating device (108) has an application unit (114) for coating of workpieces. A stream of a paint of different layer-forming medium is emitted by the application unit for coating the workpieces to apply a layer on a surface area. The application unit comprises a paint application device for applying a paint on the workpieces to be coated. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a coating system; and (2) a method for operating a coating device.
