<FORM:1069485/C4-C5/1> Anthraquinone dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:1069485/C4-C5/2> wherein R1 is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, aralkyl, aralkyloxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or furfuryl radical, having 2 to 12 carbon atoms, are made by treating 1 - hydroxy - 3 - imino - 4,7 - diamino - 5,6 - phthaloylisoindolenine with an alkylating agent R1-X, wherein X is a halogen atom or an R2-SO2-O- radical, where R2 is an aliphatic or aromatic residue. The reaction may be effected in a mixture including an acid-binding agent and a basic solvent or a mixture thereof with a neutral solvent. The starting material (in which R1 above is hydrogen, or its tautomer) may be made by contacting 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone-2,3-dinitrile with fuming sulphuric acid, having an SO3 concentration of 0 to 5%, at a temperature of 20 DEG to 30 DEG C. |
