The unit (10) has a position determination device with an excitation unit e.g. oscillator (50) such as Hartley oscillator, which is directly or indirectly connected with a tubular hydraulic cylinder barrel (20) and electrical-conductively connected with a cylinder piston (30). The determination device is partially arranged within a cylinder housing or the barrel. An electrical resonant circuit formed from the unit and contact lines (40) is stimulated for oscillating at resonance frequency. An electric signal characterizing the resonance frequency is measured as measurable voltage at the unit.
