Vinyl chloride polymers are stabilized by incorporating therein stabilizer systems comprising an organo-tin compound having organic radicals linked to tin only through carbon and oxygen, at least one organic radical being linked to tin through carbon and oxygen, at least one organic radical being linked to tin through oxygen, combined with at least one phenol compound having at least one hydrogen atom ortho to an hydroxy group, and/or an aromatic amine of formula <FORM:0988955/C3/1> wherein T represents an aromatic nucleus containing one or more separate or condensed aromatic rings, the nitrogen atoms form parts of an amino group or a heterocyclic ring, R9 and R10 are hydrogen or alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl groups with 1 to 30 carbon atoms and y is a whole number from 1 up to the maximum number of positions available for substitution in the aromatic nucleus, and if no amine is present in the system, the tin atom of the organo-tin compound must be linked to at least one carboxy group of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid the other carboxy group of which is esterified with a monohydric or dihydric alcohol. Specified vinyl chloride polymers are polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, styrene, maleic or fumaric esters, and mixtures of polyvinyl chloride with chlorinated polyethylene and copolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. The compositions may also include epoxy compounds, ultraviolet light absorbers, plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate and tricresylphosphate, and parting agents, e.g. stearic, lauric, palmitic and myristic acids, lithium stearate, calcium palmitate, mineral lubricating oils, polyvinyl stearate, polyethylene and paraffin wax. Long lists of suitable stabilizer components are given and examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, mineral oil, 4,41-butylidene bis(2-t.-butyl-5-methylphenol) and (1) dibutyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate); (3) dibutyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate), dibutyl tin bis(2-phenoxyethyl maleate), dibutyl tin bis-(2-ethoxyethyl maleate) or dibutyl tin bis(diethylene glycol maleate); (6) tri-n-octyl tin monoisooctyl maleate, di-n-octyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate, dibutyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate) or dibutyl tin-bis(monoisooctyl fumarate); and (7) dibutyl tin bis-(dipropylene glycol maleate); polyvinyl chloride, mineral oil, dibutyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate) and (2) 2-t.-butyl-4-methoxy phenol, 4-benzoyloxyphenol, nonylphenol or 2,21-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane; a mixture of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, mineral oil and (4) dibutyl tin bis(monoisoctyl maleate) and 4,41-butylidene bis(2-t.-butyl-5-methyl phenol); polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, 4,41 - butylidene bis(2 -t. - butyl-5-methyl phenol) and (5) dibutyl tin maleate or dibutyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate); polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyethylene, isooctyl epoxystearate and (8) dibutyl tin bis-(isooctyl maleate) and 2-t.-butyl-4-methoxyphenol; and polyvinyl chloride, mineral oil and (9) dibutyl tin bis(monoisooctyl maleate) and octyldiphenylamine, dioctyl tin bis(dipropylene glycol maleate) and 6-phenyl-2,2,4-trimethyldihydroquinoline, tri-n-octyl tin monoisooctyl maleate and 6-ethoxy-2,2,4-trimethyldihydroquinoline, dibutyl tin bis(monoisooctyl maleate) and 2,2,4,6-tetramethyldihydroquinoline, or dibutyl tin bis(monoisooctyl fumarate) and phenyl b -naphthylamine. |
