A theft detection apparatus is disclosed for a motor vehicle. The apparatus has an illumination device concealed within a visible component of the motor vehicle. A geographical detection device is concealed within the vehicle and includes a programmable component. An interface for programming the programmable component with details of a geo-fence is provided, so as to produce an alarm signal in response to detecting that the vehicle has moved outside of a pre-determined area. An energising device activates the illumination device in response to receiving the alarm signal. The visible component may be visible from outside of the vehicle, and may comprise a front and/or rear number plate of the vehicle, such that an indication of the theft may be displayed without the knowledge of the driver. The detection apparatus may use GPS signals for determining its location, and details of the geo-fence may be programmed by the user using a mobile telephone application. A method of detecting unauthorised movement of a vehicle using the apparatus is also disclosed. |
