(1) The holes are lined with tubes which may be grooved externally to assist cohesion with the material of the button. (2) The holes are left filled with cotton or other material which has been softened for passage of a needle; thus, a button of urea-formaldehyde resin may have holes filled with softened cellulosic or chitinous material. (3) A casein button hardened with formaldehyde may be given a gloss by treatment with sodium hypochlorite, which also softens a woven cellulosic material in the holes thereof.
